If You’re A New Webmaster, Your Biggest Mistake Could Be Made Before You Even Start

Day 1 of The 100 Days To Webpage Excellence Guide

There are basically two different reasons that people decide to start a website.  They either are passionate about a topic, and want to share that topic with everyone else, or they are in it to make money.  If you are starting a webpage about a given subject because you love it, go ahead, you’ll have fun.  If you are starting a website to make money, then you need to stop and think before you make your page.

One of the mistakes webmasters make is before they even start their page.  If a person doesn’t do any research before picking their webpage category, they can quickly be pigeonholed into a niche where they don’t have a chance of making a profit.   So if you are thinking about starting a webpage, here are some of the things you need to consider before you decide what your webpage will be about.

  • Your Passion For The Subject - Creating a profitable webpage takes  a lot of work.  Many times there will be no one to push you to work on it other than yourself.  It helps a lot if you like what you are blogging about.  If working on your webpage doesn’t seem like work to you, it will come through in your posts.  You will be much more likely to keep up your webpage after the first couple of months and give it a chance to become profitable.
  • The Profitability of the Niche- If you want to make money from your blog, you have to make sure that you are talking about a subject that can actually make you money.  Although there are markets out there for almost everything you should double check that there is interest in your topic before you start your page.  Otherwise you could waste some money and a lot of time.  The best way to do this is to do a Google search for some keyword strings about your topic.  Do ads pop up on the right hand side?  Are the ads several pages deep?  If yes, then that is good.  If there are people pursuing advertising the topic, there is money to be made.  No Ads?  You might want to consider a new topic.
  • Your Knowledge of the subject - If you are going to get readers you will have to offer something that no one else has.  Even if you take an old idea and spin it in a new way, you will have to have at least some knowledge of a topic before you start a site and pretend to be an expert on it.  If you are completely new to what you are writing about it will show through and you will lose your readers.
  • How Heavy the Competition Is - If you want your webpage to make serious money, the kind that can pay the bills and let you live comfortably and not just eke out a meager earnings, your site will have to be in the top 20% of all the websites on that topic.  So take a look at some of your competitors.  Make sure that the niche isn’t already saturated with what you are planning to offer.   Or even if there is a lot of competition, make sure that you think you will be able to beat them at their own game.

And that’s it!  How’s your idea?  Did it pass the test?  If so then you are ready for the next step, Picking your domain name.  If not, go back and rethink your idea, you may be able to tweak it and turn it into a beauty.
