Must Do Wordpress Option

Posted on May 15th, 2007 in Wordpress by Scott

Do This To Keep Your Subscribers

I often times am reading my blog feeds and see that the feeds are cut off part way through.  Although some of that is sure to be from people using the <!-more-> tag (intentionally misspelled so as not to “More this post”) there is a good chance some of it is through a misused option in Wordpress.

If you see that your posts are cut off in syndication, and you don’t use the more tag, try going to the Options menu and the Reading submenu.   In it you will see a set of Radio buttons under “Syndication Feeds”   Make sure that that button is set to “Full Text” instead of “Summary” so that your full article appears in syndication.  This will ensure that your readers aren’t forced to come to your site to read your thoughts, as many of them won’t.

Cut Out The Middle Man

Posted on May 11th, 2007 in Monetize, Wordpress by Scott

I was recently turned onto this WordPress Plugin called WPBankroll

Basically WPBankroll performs the same function for you as ReviewMe or PayPerPost.   The  difference between the two is that WPBankroll is free  ( although there is a subscribed version as well )  where as Reviewme takes half of your payment.

Obviously WPBankroll can’t take over all the functions of ReviewMe.  ReviewMe will still be great for getting advertisers who wouldn’t otherwise have come to your site.   But what about bloggers who have a “ReviewMe for $300″ banner on their site?   What is the point of sending advertisers to ReviewMe so that they can send them back and take half the money?

By using WPbankroll judiciously you can increase your income without sacrificing your ReviewMe income.   I recommend putting up a ReviewMe review price of $X  and then setting your WPBankroll price equal to 75% of your ReviewMe price.    Your advertiser will benefit from the cheaper price.    You will benefit by getting 50% more income per review.

Sounds like a Win-Win    (And a lose if you count the commission ReviewMe is losing)

New Theme

Posted on May 9th, 2007 in Wordpress by Scott

I just grabbed a new theme off of Daily Blog Tips and I must say I am very impressed with it so far.  It is far far better than the default blog theme.

2 Things that I need to modify in it though

1) My Statcounter plugin stopped working.  I deactivated it, reactivated it.  Hopefully it works again, if not I’ll need to figure out why it stopped.

2) Need to enable comments on the main page of the blog.

Both sound great things to do on Sunday

WordPress Bug

Posted on May 8th, 2007 in Wordpress by Scott

I have experience a recurring error in Wordpress which I find quite annoying.  The Spell Checker Doesn’t Work!

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?  I find that whenever I click the spell check button, it underlines all of my misspelled words.  ( As well as words such as Blog, Google, and even Wordpress.. which it should know, but that is a separate issue)

When I click on a word, it brings up suggestions for new words.. all is good so far.   But I can’t select any of the suggestions!   Clicking on them does nothing!     Has anyone else experienced this bug?    I have found the best way for me to spell check is to click the spell check button, find which words are spelled wrong, and then unclick it so I can fix the spelling.

If anyone has had experience with something similar, how did you fix it?

No Self Pings!

Posted on May 6th, 2007 in Wordpress by Scott

I personally hate self pings!

If you don’t know what pings are, in blogging terms whenever you link to a website you send a ping to that blog.  If it is enabled, in the comment section of the pinged blog you will get a link back to the pinging site.

Self-pings are when you put a link to one of your own pages.  I link to myself frequently, especially when I am writing a series.  As I result I often leave comments on my own page!

In fact, of the 35 comments on my page at the time of writing 30 of them are self pings!  I have been looking for a way to turn off self pings, but there is no internal wordpress functinality to do it.   But, like many things in wordpress, there is a plugin

This plugin will let you turn off self-pings

I have only been using it for several days, but I have found it to be extremely useful.

What do you think.  Like Self pings?  Hate them?  Will you use this plugin?

Wordpress DB Backup

Posted on May 5th, 2007 in Wordpress by Scott

A handy feature of Wordpress that I just started using is the Database Backup Plugin.  I personally do not have the knowledge to use mySQLadmin to back up my site regularly.  Luckily, with the database backup plug in, I don’t have to.

I  set up the plugin to Automatically backup my blog every week.  I keep 3 copies of each backup, one on my computer, one on another computer, and one hard copy.   I wouldn’t be able to remember to do this every week if not for the plugin.  Now if something happens to my site, I’ll be able to restore it without too much hassle.
