Engaging Your Readers
Quick!
Take a second to launch a new internet explorer window. (Or firfox if you’re more tech savvy)

How long did it take, 10 seconds? 20 if you’re running a lot of processes.
20 seconds doesn’t seem long does it? But new studies have shown that a web surfer makes almost his entire impression in less time than that. In 15 seconds the average visitor to your webpage will know what he thinks of it. He might not know why he thinks it, but he will know if he likes your site or not.
Any owner of a poorly designed site will know this. If he checks his stats they will look like this

Many people come to the site, but few stay. They link into the site, but the vast majority, over 85% leave within the first 30 seconds. This site has made a bad impression on its users. Does it have good content? Is it an important site? Who knows. No one has stuck around to look.
So what does a better site look like?

In this case, there is still a fair amount of people bouncing in the first 5 seconds, but those who stick around for longer than 5 seconds tend to stay around for a fair amount of time and check out the site. In fact, almost 20% of the people are staying on the site for over an hour. If people are on the site for that long, they will have lots of time to click on your ads.
So how to you get people to stick on your site? How do you make a good impression in the first 15 seconds?
Place an image above the fold.
Pictures come across to people much faster than words. Placing an image at the top of all of your blog posts, or near the top of all of the pages of your website can keep people sticking around. Put a caption on the image, people will stick around to read it. Tie the image into the content, people will read it. Need some neat pictures, grab some here
Use headers
You need to set some of your text out from the rest of it. This is your lure. Your plan is to draw the eye to this text, and once you have done so lure the audience into reading the rest of your post. You can do this by using headers. Make your text stand out. You will be rewarded for it. More on Using Blog headers
Unique Style
This site nonwithstanding, a slick design to your site says a lot about it. The same article can appear on two sites. The site with the eye catching colors will get people to read the article, and ultimately click on its ads. The blah site which is a dime a dozen will bounce its visitors quickly. Dreary Site? Engage Your Readers
Even if you keep people for the first 15 seconds by the look of your site, the next 30 seconds are almost as important. You have to have your most important and interstesting points at the top of your articles. Don’t bury your lead as journalists would say. Take a lesson from them. If you read a newspaper, the most significant paragraphs are the first. After that they get less and less important. The same should be said of your webpage.
